LIGHTS IN FALLAS

Various Fallas Guilds and Neighbours Associations, join forces in Fallas to create lighting displays during the Fallas Festival in Valencia, and above are two examples of these gigantic creations.

FALLAS CREATIONS

The two "Fallas" above are taller than the nearby apartment buildings

Fallas are gigantic effigies created from papier machè and wood. They are evolved from an artist´s sketch and constructed in special workshops over a period of twelve months.

Around the 10th March, cranes and trucks start to collect them and erect them in their designated spots, where they are admired by locals and visitors all during the Fallas festivities.

At midnight on the 19th March, the whole construction is set alight, and burns while people contemplate the bonfire.

The origin of this fiesta goes back centuries to when carpenters collected all the wood shavings accumulated in their workshops over the winter, and on the night of the 19th March, the Fiesta of their Patron, Saint Joseph, created bonfires with the shavings, to which neighbours and friends added old furniture, and other debris.

THE LAST FIRECRACKER SHOW FALLAS 2014

Maximo Buch, Valencian Government Councillor of Economy, Industry, Tourism, and Employment, was there to cut the ribbon (below), while Manuel Arbona, Valencian representative of Orienterraneum, the Spain Week organisers, presented the programme of activities related to the Valencian Region, which will be "Special Invited Guest" in this first edition of Spain Week 2014.

Alberto Fabra, President of the Valencian Government and Rita Barbera, Mayoress of Valencia, along with other Valencian politicians and dignitaries, presided "THE CALL" (LA CRIDA) by Carmen Sancho, Senior Fallera Queen, who, accompanied by her Maids of Honour, offered the Key of the City, inviting all citizens of Valencia and visitors, participate in the Fallas Fiestas that start now and end on the night of the 19th March when gigantic bonfires bearing life-size papièr mâchè figures, are set aflame all over the city.

Claudia Villodre, Junior Fallera Queen and her Maids of Honour, were also present at the ceremony.

FALLERA PLANE LANDS IN VALENCIA

Every year some 50 immigrants fly into Valencia from different countries in Latin America to participate as Falleras in the traditional Fallas Fiestas.

This Fallera Plane is a follow-up on the Fallera Ship that started travelling to Valencia in the sixties.

"CONTROL YOURSELF IN FALLAS - OR YOU WILL LOSE IT" HEALTH CAMPAIGN

Manuel Llombart, Valencian Government Councillor of Public Health, in conjunction with the non-profit Control Club, presented the XV edition of a campaign to encourage underage children to refrain from consuming alcoholic drinks and drugs during the Fallas fiestas that take place in Valencia the week ending the 19th March.

The campaign was presented in the Fallas Centre where Councillor Llombart was accompanied by Carmen Sancho, senior Fallas Queen of Valencia, Jose L. Vaello, Secretary General of the Central Fallas Executive, and Vicente Pizcueta, Chairman of the Control Club.

NINOT EXPOSITION OPENS IN VALENCIA

Rita Barbera, Mayoress of Valencia (left in the above photo), helped Carmen Sancho, Senior Fallera Queen of Valencia, and Claudia Villodre, Junior Fallera Queen of Valencia, accompanied by their Dames of Honour, cut the ribbon to officially inaugurate the Ninot Exposition in Valencia.

Every year, one NINOT or papier mâchè figure, on every Falla, is saved from the flames when the Fallas are burned on the night of the 19th March . These are exhibited in a marquee erected on the esplanade of Nuevo Centre, beside the El Corte Ingles department store.

FALLEROS IN THE FITUR TOURIST FAIR

Every year, hundreds of Falla Committees name Alfonso Rus, chairman of the Valencia County Council, an Honorary Fallero of Provincial Fallas,, and this year is no exception. According to the tradition, the Honorary Fallero responds to the honour by donating a sum of money to enable the committees "launch" their Falla, and also participate as special guests in the events organised by each committee.

The above photograph reflects a moment in which different committees dressed in the traditional Valencian costume, parade around the stand the Valencian Region had in the International Tourism Fair - FITUR, in Madrid, as they pay tribute to Alfonso Rus.
